Traces of an Italic settlement that dates from between the 3rd and the 1st centuries B.C. , along with megalithic walls, can be visited on Monte Ferrante. Also on this mountain, there is a Samnite fortification dating back to a time between the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. A beautiful piazza faces the 15th century Church of Santa Maria Assunta , in which the remains of the native Saint and protector of Carovilli, Stefano del Lupo (19 July) are preserved. Also of note in the church’s interior are two splendid holy water fonts dating back respectively to the 17th and 18th centuries, and a 17th century baptistry. The name of this pleasant village was probably derived from the Roman Consul, Spurio Carvillo, or perhaps from the name of its ancient lord, Berardus De Calvello, listed in the catalog of Norman barons. On a high spur of rock, in the hamlet of Castiglione di Carovilli, are the evocative ruins of the Church of San Nicola, dating back to the 14th centure. The Church of San Domenico and its roadside cross are linked to transhumance.
Carovilli is a village associated with sheep farming from which fine meat products and excellent cheeses, both fresh and aged, are obtained. There is also an abundance of valuable truffles found in the area.
